Do you watch the show "The Sing-Off"?
Well, I guess the question should be DID you watch the show, because it was just cancelled by NBC. Which is sad, because it really was the best singing reality show on TV. How do I know? Because it was all ACAPELLA.
That's right. No hiding behind ridiculous bands or autotune. The singers on this show are the real deal. I watched all 3 seasons, and was really sad when I heard it was cancelled.
This past season, a group named Pentatonix really stretched the acapella genre. They added a twist by getting one of the best beat-boxers I have ever heard, and added cool riffs in their singing (like moments where it sounds like a record skipping--unreal!) to make them completely unique. Needless to say, they won the show for season 3, which was greatly deserved. No one does acapella better than them!
This is my favorite performance of theirs from the show:
A couple of weekends ago, I heard that Pentatonix was going to be performing at Universal CityWalk, which is only about a 20 minute drive from our (old) house! I was completely excited!! I left Nick to continue packing (sorry, Nick), and went on Sunday night. I got there about an hour early, which turned out to be perfect timing, because I ended up being right up in front! There were about 2 rows of people in front of me, but because I am tall, it didn't matter.
I made a shirt (in the vein of these types of shirts), and was super excited for the show to start.
The Backbeats (performers on The Sing-Off from Season 2) performed before Pentatonix, and got the crowd warmed up.
Then PTX performed! They did a little medley from some of the hits they did on the show, then did a few of their YouTube performances. They released their first EP, and also performed some of their new singles. It was a really amazing show, and I loved it!
Kevin (the beat-boxer) is my favorite. He's a really strong Christian, and he lived in China for a while, too (just like me)!
Here's one of my favorite performances of theirs that they have uploaded for YouTube:
If you like those, I recommend looking up their other videos on YouTube. I am going to see their show here in LA in September, and I can't wait!

WOW! They are amazing... thanks for this post!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, Aunt Bren, they are unbelievable. Check out their version of "Somebody That I Used to Know".
DeleteMy husband and I were at that citiwalk show too and I made sure we got there 2 hours early so that there was no question abut being right up front! It was incredible and we're also going to the Roxy show in Sept! See you there...and in the meantime, I'm sure we'll both be enjoying PTX vol. 1, along with every other song they've done! And, I love your shirt! CUTE :)
ReplyDeleteWere you guys on the right side, or the left side? I probably saw you! I made friends with the people standing next to me. I'll keep an eye out for you in September (I'll be wearing my shirt again!). :)
DeleteHow nice of you to post this great review of my all time favorite acapella group! I have seen them in concert too, and they are so amazing! Not only that, the members of this group are so nice and down to earth. Jealous of your September concert! :D
