We started out today in Rawlins, Wyoming. We stayed at Nick's grandparent's house, where Nick spent a lot of summers while he was growing up. Nick's grandma is currently in a nursing home, so we spent a nice part of the morning visiting with her and her new roommate, Connie. We are so glad she is being well-taken care of there!
After we left the nursing home, we visited handy-dandy TripAdvisor. We really enjoy visiting local places to eat while we are on a trip, and today was no exception! We ate at 1800 Coco's Restaurant in downtown Rawlins. It was a restaurant located in a home built in the 1800s, so it had a lot of cool flair. The salad bar was very yummy. I made a poor decision for my own lunch choice, but Nick had a very yummy french dip sandwich. We will return the next time we are in Rawlins!
After leaving Rawlins, we headed to Glendo, Wyoming, which is about 200 miles away. Nick's brother Jesse works at a camp there, so we headed out to see him and his wife, and their new baby!
You know you're not in Ohio anymore when....your road is blocked by a cow! Gus and Waldo definitely perked up when we passed this herd, and Gus let out a low growl. I guess he didn't realize he was outweighed by about 1000 pounds!
When we got to the camp, Gus and Waldo got to stretch out their legs by running around in the creek, and exploring the ranch.
Gus got himself some burrs in his fur, which was royally fun to get out.
Waldo's sniffer was going a mile a minute!
Then, the highlight of the day: We got to see some horses! I just love the boys in this one--tails up, necks stretched to see what that is in the pen!
Gus was a little more hesitant. Actually growling a bit, which we discouraged. But Waldo was all sniffs and curiosity, sticking his head in between the grates, and sniffing right up in the horse's nose! At one point, he even jumped and put his paws up on the grates to get a better look! I think Waldo would make a good ranch dog--and maybe with other horses around, people would stop asking if Waldo is a horse!
Fun facts:
*I slept today. Sorry, Nick. Old habits die hard.
*I have searched over and over from Ohio to Wyoming for Mt. Dew Throwback. Nothing. And of course, we get to this tiny, general store in 200-population Glendo, Wyoming, and what do they have?? Mt. Dew Throwback!! WIN!
*Lake Glendo here is waay overflowing, and actually all of the rivers are. The North Platte river still shocks us every time we drive over it on a bridge.
*We ate dinner in Douglas, Wyoming, where Nick and his family lived from the time Nick was about 7, until he was 12. We were driving around, looking at all of his old haunts--where he used to get 10 cent soda, where he used to ride his bike, where he used to go ice skating, where the hotel was that he used to live in, where he went to middle school, and the hill that he went down on his bike on and the front wheel flew off and he flew over the handlebars and got a concussion. I say that explains a lot. :)
*Today we ate: 1800 Coco's, Village Inn (both meal fails for Allison, and meal WINS for Nick), and McDonalds for sundaes and iced tea (yummy)
